Comparing Air Guns and Cartridge Rifles
Airgun ballistics are unique.
Ballistics for air guns do not fall within the normal ranges included in data
published by the manufacturers of conventional ammunition or bullets.
When comparing conventional bullets from a well known manufacturer
having their lowest and highest ballistic coefficients (0.12 and 0.56
respectively) with a typical .177 airgun pellet having a ballistic
coefficient of 0.012 (a match pellet would typically be in this range),
glaring differences in performance are obvious.
For example given the following conditions with a 10 mile per hour crosswind:
Rifleman Ballistic Coefficient = .56 Muzzle Velocity = 2600 ft/sec. Sight in Zero at 300 yards
Airgunner Ballistic Coefficient = .011 Muzzle Velocity = 900 ft/sec. Sight in Zero at 20 yards
The Rifleman would have to aim about 13½" high and allow for a 11" wind
drift to hit a target at 400 yards. An Airgunner should aim about the
same 13½" high but should allow for over 17" drift in order to hit a
target at just 70 yards. Airgunning at 70 yards can be as challenging as
shooting a conventional rifle at a quarter of a mile. It's no wonder
that shooting air guns is so much fun!
